Building the next AI & Robotics frontier in Europe

Frontier technology decides what happens downstream: how industries compete, how science advances, how societies are run. Europe starts this race with real strengths. Much of the world's best research still originates here, and that is a foundation to build on rather than one we have to invent.

The task is to turn that research into companies and capabilities that Europe owns. If the continent depends on AI & Robotics systems designed elsewhere, it ends up renting its own future, both the tools its industries run on and the science those tools increasingly make possible. Progress in biology, medicine and physics now leans on AI, so falling behind on the technology means falling behind on the discovery as well.

Robotics is where Europe's hand is strongest. The catch-up gap is shorter than in AI, and the continent's manufacturing base, the most robotics-ready in the world, carries decades of operational data that few others can match. 

At the same time, a deepening shortage of skilled workers is creating real demand for automation: in service work, where AI applies, and in the skilled trades, where robotics does. The need and the opportunity point the same way, for anyone able to move quickly.

None of this happens in one layer alone. We think about the frontier across four layers that have to move together: 

• AI Hardware: the compute and chips everything else runs on. 
• AI Algorithms: the models and learning paradigms that push capability forward. 
• Data: the sovereign, high-quality data that grounds those models in the real world.
• Robotics Hardware: the actuators, sensors and platforms that carry intelligence into physical space. 

That is why we back teams across the full stack, not just the parts that make headlines.

Currently, we back teams across three challenges, in AI, in robotics, and in the health data that medicine now depends on, and we give them what breakthrough work actually requires. Funding without the red tape, so teams have real firepower from day one. The freedom to pursue new approaches instead of optimising old ones. Structural support that pairs strong teams with the talent and partners they need. And a foundation of European values, so that what gets built strengthens the continent's sovereignty rather than eroding it. This is how Europe stops competing on someone else's frontier and starts setting its own.
